Muiñeira de Chantada

September 29, 2017

Muiñeira de Chantada at the September session, with David Carril playing gaita. Watch out for the Muiñeira dancing at the end …

I discovered this through Nadia’s tutorial and suggested it for the session. Mano had a version in A, but we’re now playing it in C. Dots for this version are here. Alternatively, you can look it up in the folkoteca galega which will automatically create a score in whatever key you choose.

Pasodobre de Silván

We had another lovely session with David Carril from London playing the gaita and a guest singer from Galicia helping our local pandeireteiras. Here’s my first video, I have another which I’ll share later.

Fisterra is kind of the national anthem of the Galician session – we always sing it at the end. Here is a rare polyphonic version. I love the echo effects from the male voices (eg “meu ben”) as well as the dynamic contrasts which are also widely used in folk arrangements (eg by Treixadura and Luar na Lubre).

tunes for the September session

September 22, 2017

with the next session less than a week away, preparations are getting serious.  The pandeireteiras have compiled a list of songs they are planning to sing, and we’ll pick something like a dozen tunes to intersperse while they’re catching their breath.

Here are the tunes that we have successfully played at one or both of the last two sessions, plus a couple that I have practiced, making up 16 altogether, so a good supply with a few to spare:

Alalá do cebreiro                     D

A bruxa                                   Dminor

Danza Arcos Cariño                C

Danza de Xigantes                  G

Golpe de Mondariz / Pasacorr            G

Jota de Mahia                          D

Marchiña de Reis                    D

Mazurca                                  D

Mazurca dos areeiras               G

Muiñeira do Areal                   C

Muiñeira Cervantes                  D

Muiñeira chantada                  C minor/major

Muiñeira Freixido                   D

Muiñeira Ponte San Paio          D minor

Pasodoble Berbes                   G

Valse de Lalin                        C

Some of them, like A bruxa, Valse de Lalin and Muiñeira Ponte San Paio   we always play by default, others are open for discussion. Additional suggestions always welcome. Closer to the date we’ll mix up a set list alternating songs and tunes.

Here’s a song you may hear at Galician sessions, performed by Mano’s band Xogara:

Muiñeira da Ponte San Paio

Muiñeira da Ponte San Paio – one of the tunes we always play. This tutorial is in the same key we play (D minor) and it includes slow demonstrations of the separate parts as well as a full speed performance. I’ve used it to play along to in trying to get my playing up to speed.

muiñeira de freixido

The muiñeira de freixido is one of the tunes we play regularly at the Galician session, here is a version from Trio Espiral from Portugal, which is quite similar to ours:

September session

September 14, 2017

Just a wee bit quieter in the absence of our founding genius Mano, the Galician sessions are still happening at the James Street Tavern,  on the last Wednesday of each month, so this month it’s Wed 27.9., 8:30 pm to 11:30 pm. There will still be lots of lovely tunes, plus singing and percussions from the Oxford Pandeireteiras, and there may even be a bit of floor space available for dancing. Sheet music will be provided for anybody who brings an instrument and wants to join in. A bag of miscellaneous percussion instruments is also available if you would like to rattle along with the rhythms.
